Oh shit! Oh shit! Oh shit!

I'm going to die!

Oh shit!

Splash!

...

Maybe not.

Splash!

Oh. You're here, too.

[ooc: And welcome Rincewind to the City. He has just landed in the fountain, followed closely by the Luggage. For those who don't know the Luggage, it appears to be a rather battered wooden trunk. Until it stands up and you see hundreds of little human-ish feet.]

Not connected to the network, no. I can't say if there aren't any in the city at all, as there are a lot of strange things here.

Lot of strange things. Right.

I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

And that's an understatement.

I'm afraid it may drop soon, we're about due for another curse any day now.

Of course "we" are. Do these curses have people turning inside out or suddenly deciding to kill anyone wearing a pointy hat?

Date: 2007-11-14 04:09 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bright-shield.livejournal.com
No, not that I know of. Although we had a recent one where people went crazy and started hunting down the magic users which was ever so much fun considering I'm a magic user myself.

The last curse turned half the city back into kids. The ones this month haven't been too bad, thank goodness.

From: [identity profile] failed-wizard.livejournal.com
Right. Because being spotty and getting picked on by the older kids is exactly what I want to relive.

Strike, What Strike?

From: [identity profile] bright-shield.livejournal.com
Well, most of the kids seemed nice enough, if a bit rambunctious. And I'm not going to tell that someone was eating the kids... There was also that time that candy and coins started falling out of the sky...

I see no strike.

Date: 2007-11-14 04:28 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] failed-wizard.livejournal.com
Right. Falling from the sky. I expect it might hurt quite a lot if it landed on your head. It always does.

. . . I can't really say, as I was passed out from something or other at the time, but those coins sure would have come in handy now. Before we used to pay for everything with buttons and lint and hair.

But ah yes, keep your wits about you come midnight. That's when the curses strike. Usually.

From: [identity profile] bright-shield.livejournal.com
It's not that bad, really! Usually. If nothing happens at midnight, that usually means that nothing will happen that day at all. Except during that one festival where everyone turned into what costume they were wearing at sunset, but besides that...

You know, when someone says "It's not that bad," it usually is that bad.

Date: 2007-11-14 04:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bright-shield.livejournal.com
Well, not usually. . . Having a cautiously optimistic outlook can't hurt?

Date: 2007-11-14 04:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] failed-wizard.livejournal.com
It doesn't hurt after you're dead, I suppose.

Date: 2007-11-14 05:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bright-shield.livejournal.com
. . . . that would be about 1/4 of the city. You can't die permanently here. Usually.

Date: 2007-11-14 05:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] failed-wizard.livejournal.com
As soon as I count on that, I'll be one of the ones who dies for good.

Date: 2007-11-14 05:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bright-shield.livejournal.com
Ah yes, dying is not something I generally encourage. For one, it hurts and two, there's that lack of body warmth thing and such... but you don't have to be dead to be optimistic. It's easier to leave the city if you're not dead anyway.

It doesn't matter. As soon as I get comfortable and happy someplace, I'll just get jerked out of it.

Look at it this way: experience says that things always go wrong. Always.

If I expect it, I'm prepared. If it happens, I'm ready to run. If it doesn't happen, I'm pleasantly surprised for 30 seconds before I return to expecting what experience tells me has to happen: something bad.

From: [identity profile] bright-shield.livejournal.com
Always prepared for the worst, huh? Well, that's sensible as long as you don't dwell on it too much. You'll definitely be wanting to keep an eye on the network then, its the best early warning system we have here.

I'll remember. Every little bit helps. And a good pair of running shoes.1

[1In Rincewind's case, consisting of two foot-shaped planks of wood held on by a loop of twine over the toe. They are shit for running in, but perfect for running straight out of, leaving your pursuers staring at your shoes for an extra half-second.]

Well, they say he who runs away, lives to fight another day. Good luck in the city! This seems to be another week for people to be drawn in here. I'm Riou, by the way, if you ever need any help.

I'm Rincewind. Someone else named Lee is going to take me to the library. If I disappear, send a search party?

Date: 2007-11-14 06:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bright-shield.livejournal.com
. . . . uh yes, that library is special. You never find what you're looking for, but I don't think anyone's gone missing there yet. That'd be the Hall of the Missing. But, pleased to meet you, Rincewind!

Sounds like home. That's the best news I've heard yet.

Nice to ... meet you, Riou.
